Snapshots are created as incremental copies of data. This means that only unique blocks of the block storage volume data that have changed since the last snapshot are stored in the next snapshot. Backing up data in this form allows customers to delete incremental segments without deleting the rest of the data. We offer two types of snapshots: Block storage and VPS. The Block storage snapshot is stored in the block storage, in the same availability zone as the original volume. The VPS snapshot is the complete snapshot of the machine instance including the image of the instance, root disk and all attached volume disks.
COMMON SNAPSHOT USE CASES:
We keep the stored data consistent and intact, considerably mitigating risk of drive failures, or any form of data corruption.
High data availability ensures that your data is always accessible when and where needed.
PEACE OF MIND
Knowing your mission critical data is safely backed up and can be accessed easily.
It is possible to restore the data at any time.
STARTING A NEW VPS INSTANCE
It is possible to start a new VPS instance off the snapshotted bootable volume.
Automated retention management makes it easy to minimise storage costs by retaining backups for only as long as are needed.
There is no need to stop the virtual machine to create a snapshot.
When more than one snapshot of the same volume is being done, only the difference is stored. It allows for saving the space needed for storing snapshots.
The data can be encrypted with encryption keys stored at SDW and managed by the customer.
DATA TRANSFER OPTIONS
Depending on customer demand and required key metrics, SDW provides both synchronous and asynchronous data transfer options.
SSL / TLS ENCRYPTION
Enables high security encrypted end-to-end data transfer.
Snapshots can be scheduled on an hourly, daily or weekly basis, or at any specific time.
